Reticular Tissue

Key:

  1. Reticular fibers
  2. Hepatocytes (parenchymal cells that are supported by the fibers)

Description:

  • The main constituent of this tissue is the fiber type: Reticular fibers [1].
  • These reticular fibers form a 3 dimensional framework (stroma) that the functional cells [2] (parenchyma) of the organs sit on.
  • Cell types include:
    1. White blood cells
    2. Macrophages
    3. Mast cells
    4. Liver cells (called hepatocytes)

Function:

  • Forms a soft internal skeleton to support the cell types.

Location:

  • Spleen
  • Liver
  • lymph nodes
  • Bone marrow
