Key:

  1. Elastic fibers (stained pink to make them easier to see)

Description:

  • Is mostly comprised of elastic fibers for great resiliency.

Function:

  • Helps to stabilize components of the skeletal system.
  • Permits expansion and contraction of organs.

Location:

  • Between the vertebrae as ligaments (ligamentum flavum and ligamentum nuchae)
  • In ligaments that support the penis
  • In ligaments that support transitional epithelium (in urinary bladder)
  • Also in blood vessel walls (in large arteries like the Aorta)
